Tuesday of Harry Potter Week

A living rosary

Here at CYC we take prayer very seriously! That’s one of the reasons why after breakfast and cabin activity — a time designated for cabins to visit some of the activity stations as a group — we all headed over to the CYC field for an hour of ministry programs.

Drawing on our Catholic tradition as well as the energy and creativity of our campers we created a great big "living rosary" and this is how we did it: cabins met after a brief description of the background and purpose of the rosary and came up with a skit for one of the five joyful mysteries. After everyone had had a chance to prepare we moved around the field and said the rosary with each group jumping in to offer a meditation before their assigned decade.

The activity was a great success. We even had many of the campers choose to participate in an option rosary making craft during their break time. The activity as a whole gave us a chance to share our gifts and talents to help each other grow in faith and virtue!

Harry Potter trivia

Just after break then we had another fun activity this one having to do directly with this week’s theme of Harry Potter. Cabins once again got into groups on the field and were given the chance to win points for correct answers to questions about the Harry Potter books and movies.

Think you might have faired well in this challenge? Well you may well have — that is if you can define "squib" (a muggle born into a wizarding family) enumerate the fouls there are in quidditch (there are 700) or name the item made by Harry’s uncle/step-father’s factory (drills).

Campers completely baffled the staff by correctly answering nearly every single question we threw at them (and successfully completely several challenges along the way!). It just goes to show how much kids really can soak in when they take the time to read a book!

Fuzz Ball and s’mores over the fire

Just a half hour ago campers had a chance to try out CYC’s latest game: Fuzz Ball. A combination of Angel’s and Demons and capture the flag Fuzz Ball encourages campers to call to mind the five Cs (they have to gather balls from each of five stations one named for each C) while allowing them to run and play and compete in a safe environment.

Now we’re all sitting around the campfire eating s’mores enjoying some hilarious counselor skits and singing some fabulous camp songs. Next it’s heads meds and beds and then off to sleep. Campers have much to look forward to though. We still have a dance party quidditch and Hogwarts classes to come this week!

Stay posted for all the fun-filled details!
